Dimensional weight (DIM weight) is a pricing method used by FedEx, UPS, USPS and other carriers to charge based on how much space a package occupies — not just how heavy it is on a scale.

DIM weight pricing addresses a fundamental logistics problem: a truck or aircraft has finite cargo space, not just finite weight capacity. Before DIM weight, shippers could send large, light boxes at very low cost, filling trailers with low-density freight that consumed space but generated little revenue. By charging for volume, carriers align pricing with actual capacity consumption, which is especially important as e-commerce growth has made trailer and aircraft space increasingly scarce.
The DIM factor is the divisor each carrier sets — and updates periodically — to convert cubic inches into billable pounds. For example, FedEx and UPS currently use a DIM factor of 139 for most ground shipments. The formula is: DIM Weight = (Length × Width × Height) ÷ DIM Factor. A lower DIM factor results in a higher billed weight, so carriers adjust this number to manage revenue and capacity. In 2015, the DIM factor for ground was lowered from 166 to 139, which increased DIM weight charges by approximately 19% for the same package.
Follow these steps: (1) Measure your package dimensions in inches (Length × Width × Height) at the widest points. (2) Multiply to get cubic inches.
